Freedom and the Fight to Lead Yourself First

On July 4th, we celebrate freedom. But for those of us who've served and for anyone who's ever faced hardship, freedom means more than fireworks and BBQ. It means sacrifice, courage, and the everyday choice to lead, even when it's hard.
I've worn the uniform. I've stood in places where freedom wasn't guaranteed. And I've seen firsthand what it costs, not just in war zones, but in personal lives, in silent battles, in moments no one else ever sees.
But the truth is, you don't have to be on a battlefield to fight for freedom.
You fight for it every time you choose:
1. Discipline over comfort
2. Accountability over blame
3. Purpose over Popularity
4. Integrity when no one is watching
That's self-leadership.
And that's where absolute freedom starts, not with fireworks, but with fire inside of you.
Because if you can't lead yourself, you'll always be a prisoner to your circumstances, your impulses, or someone else's opinion of you.
This Independence Day, let's not just celebrate the founding of our nation,
Let's recommit to the daily discipline of leading ourselves with intention, resilience, and grace.
Freedom isn't something you're handed. It's something you honor with how you live, how you lead, and how you lift others.
Happy 4th of July—lead well,
On this 4th of July, I'm not just reflecting on what it means to live in a free country. I'm thinking about what it takes to be a free person, someone who leads themselves with discipline, integrity, and purpose, even when no one’s watching.
In my latest LinkedIn newsletter, I share what service taught me about absolute freedom—and why it starts with the small decisions we make every day.
This Independence Day, let’s lead lives worth celebrating.
